Experience

**Note: I've just moved to Colrain, MA, after tutoring for several years in Northern California. Just in case the geographical references in the profile below throw anyone off.** I worked for 2 years as an ESL tutor at the SY Academy in Alameda, CA, helping visiting Korean grade school students improve their English skills (reading, writing, and speaking). I also assisted them with all academic subjects -- math, history, science, etc. I worked as a writing tutor at the San Francisco State University Disability Program and Resource Center, supporting college students with academic challenges, and I worked as a writing tutor at the Oberlin College tutoring center as well. I have taught English as a Second Language at the American Academy of English in San Francisco and have worked as a special education instructor at Spectrum Center School in Oakland, California. I have taught Modern Poetry, Composition, and Introduction to Creative Writing at UC Santa Cruz, where I am also a doctoral candidate in the Literature Department. I have taught Multicultural Adolescent Literature at California State University at Monterey Bay. I want to work as a tutor again because I know from experience what tremendous progress students can make with one-on-one support. I have committed myself to a career in education because I believe young people -- given the resources and support -- have the capacity to exceed their own expectations and discover new strengths they will carry with them the rest of their lives. Relevant Classes -- Writing 203: Teaching Writing (UC Santa Cruz, Spring, 2012); Pedagogy of Literature (UC Santa Cruz, Fall, 2010) Test Scores: SAT (1200); Passed the CBEST (California Basic Education Skills Test)
